Why should I give my pet a supplement?

Posted by Brad Pattison on
The most common question I have received about dog and cat supplements is not about which one can help this issue or that issue. Why should I give my pet a supplement? My immediate answer in one word “health”, for the health of the pet!
Pet supplements are not new to veterinarians and we see them on shelves in pet stores. Supplements for pets are being sold in more places than ever before. And, rightfully so. There are more cats and dogs in household than ever before. Pet companionship is at the highest level. As of 2019 the amount of pet owned households in the United States, was one third of the US population, nearly 43 million cats, 63.4 million dogs.
Pet population exceeds people population in the US. Horses, reptiles, birds, dogs, cats and more. Account for nearly 400 million pets cared for by people.
Three dogs, pets, Australian Shepherd, German Shepherd, Border Collie mix
Sixty-seven percent of U.S. households, or about 85 million families, own a pet, according to the 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey conducted by the American Pet Products Association (APPA). This is up from 56 percent of U.S. households in 1988, the first year the survey was conducted.
Injury to animals is inevitable, as with people, accidents happen. At Brad Pattison Pet Wellness, we have taken a similar approach in health management for pets as we do for ourselves. Exercise, fresh air, mental stimulation, physical challenges, socialization all contribute to a healthier lifestyle. As a dog owner I have seen injury to dogs happen by pure accident. Jumping up or off a bed, torn ligaments or muscles, even breaking a bone has been known to happenInjuries happen and they occur usually when we least expect it.
Knowing this, we shifted our thinking to preventative care. Runners warm up before they begin running, they hydrate, eat healthier and take supplements. For our pets we believe that a preventative approach is best when guiding them through their lives. Examples of preventative measures include, eating healthy food, drinking ample water, and taking a supplement designed for their lifestyle.
The dog will play hard, will run and jump, will get hurt occasionally. Regardless if it’s a minor or a major injury, when it does happen, we want companion pets to be as healthy as possible and recover as quickly as they can. Anecdotally speaking, I have seen dogs recuperate sooner when taking supplements.
We have formulated our Pain Inflammation Hip & Joint Care soft chews to contain Chondroitin Sulfate which works by inhibiting cartilage-destroying enzymes. Chondroitin requires a loading dose similar to glucosamine. When given with glucosamine, chondroitin has a synergistic effect and has been shown to lessen inflammation if given before a joint injury in dogs. Chondroitin sulfate is a chemical that is normally found in cartilage around joints in the body. Chondroitin sulfate is used for osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a slowly progressive and debilitating disease that affects canines of all breeds. Pain and decreased mobility resulting from osteoarthritis often have a negative impact on the affected canine’s quality of life, level of comfort, daily functioning, activity, behaviour, and client-pet companionship. Chondroitin sulfate is the major glycosaminoglycan found in cartilage. It promotes water retention and elasticity in the cartilage, helping to ensure adequate shock absorption and adequate nourishment of the tissues that line the joint.

We now know that many dogs and cats can become riddled with stress or anxiety. Top two triggers are separation anxiety and thunderstorms. We can’t do anything about controlling the weather, and often we are not present when a dog has an incident experiencing separation anxiety. We put together a formulation which will help provide some relief. A supplement that can be given daily and assist with the issue the family pet is experiencing: Hemp Calming soft chews pet supplement.
The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has an interesting article about assessing pet supplements. A very good read to learn more from the veterinarian community. I have attached a link for you here
